Afraid of IUD Pain? Here’s What Actually Happens

For many women considering an IUD, fear of insertion pain is the main reason they hesitate. Often, that fear is shaped by what they’ve seen online.

Social media can be a powerful source of information, but it can also amplify the most dramatic experiences. Algorithms tend to show us more of what we’ve already watched, so after viewing one video describing a difficult insertion, it can quickly feel like that is the universal experience. In reality, this creates an echo chamber that doesn’t reflect the full range of outcomes. When an IUD insertion goes smoothly, people are far less likely to post about it, which naturally skews what we see.

If you’d like balanced, evidence-based information, we recommend watching this video by Dr Katharine McNamee, Medical Director of Sexual Health Victoria, discussing pain and IUD insertion.

At Auslink Medical Centre, your comfort and control are our priority. We advise taking analgesia before the procedure. During insertion, local anaesthetic is applied to the cervix to reduce discomfort. If additional pain relief is needed, Penthrox (“the green whistle”) is available for an additional fee. Most importantly, you remain in control throughout: you can pause, take a break, continue, or stop the procedure at any time.

If you’re considering an IUD and would like personalised advice, book an appointment with Dr Jean Ong at Auslink Medical Centre to discuss your options in a supportive and informed setting.

  1. From my perspective, fear of IUD insertion is very common, but it’s often based on uncertainty rather than actual experience. The procedure itself is typically brief, and while some discomfort or cramping can occur, it usually passes quickly.

I always emphasize the importance of being informed and discussing concerns with a healthcare professional beforehand. Understanding what to expect can significantly reduce anxiety and help you feel more in control.

Every individual’s experience is different, but in most cases, the process is manageable and well-tolerated, especially with proper preparation and guidance.
